Oreo Truffles
Go here to get a recipe for my new favorite chocolate dessert. I added 2 tsp. of flavoring to the cookie mixture. Either almond extract or mint extract. You can sprinkle almonds or crushed pepperming on top. Yum.
Diet Items
Watch for sales on exercise equipment and dieting items. Lots of folks are making resolutions--myself included. There will be much competiton for your dollar. Choose wisely and only buy what you know you will really use. Most home exercise equipment is rarely used ( guilty).
I have been BUSY!
I hope all of you saved this Christmas by shopping the many sales at retailers. I found there to be many deals due to the slow economy. Wait a couple of days and you will see prices continue to decline to clear out the old merchandise and put out the new spring items. Also, unwanted items will be returned to the store so if you missed out on something, it may be there now. Remember, saving is about how much you spend--not how much you save.

Buy it Before You Need It
By making a list of items you use, you can be ahead of the game! If you keep your coupons organized and watch for clearance, you can stock up on things like batteries and household cleaners. I rarely run out of regular household items by adopting this practice. Also, I get them at a great price.
Clearance Sections
Most stores have clearance sections. I am always amazed at what you can find. Many places overstock so when they need room on the shelf, they move the older items to a clearance section. I have seen them in Winn-Dixie and even Walmart. Combine your coupons with marked down items to get a real deal.

2 stalks celery, sliced on diagonal

Add 1 Tbsp. oil to hot wok and swirl in pan. Add 1/2 beef and cook until browned, stirring frequently--about 2 minutes. Remove and repeat with 1 Tbsp. oil and remaining beef.
Brown and remove. Add the rest of the oil repeat. Add remaining 2 Tbsp. oil and sautee the celery and bell pepper for 1 minute. Add onion and squash. Continue cooking until onion begins to turn clear. Add garlic and stir for 30 seconds. Add cooked beef back to pan and heat through. Add water and soy sauce. Cook until sauce thickens about 1 minute. Today I was in Zachary, La. A friend told me to stop at store named "Dirt Cheap". They buy out unsold merchandise from big department chains. I got a dress and a swimsuit cover up. Bill was $20.00. Tomato Zuchinni Soup with Italian Sausage
Tomato Zuchinni Soup with Italian Sausage
3 medium sized zucchini, split lengthwise, oiled and seasoned with salt and pepper
1 large onion, diced
Olive oil for sauté (about 2 Tbsp.)
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 can white cannellini or great northern beans, drained and rinsed
½ cup red wine
3 cups chicken or beef broth
Salt, pepper, Tony’s to taste
8 oz. baby Bella mushrooms, sliced
Olive oil for sauté (about 1 Tbsp.)
2 - 15 oz. cans fire roasted diced tomatoes
1/4 cup diced roasted red bell pepper (jarred)
2 tsp. dried basil
Slash of balsamic vinegar
Use some olive oil to coat the zucchini. Season with salt and pepper, then roast in a 425 oven near heat element until slightly brown—about 20 minutes. Heat more olive oil on med low and sautĂ© onion with salt, pepper and Tony’s until tender. Add garlic and sautĂ© a minute more. Add wine and cook 2 minutes. Add broth and ½ can of beans. Cook 2 more minutes. Use stick blender to puree soup. Add tomatoes, red bell pepper, rest of the beans and basil. Simmer on low heat. While simmering, use some olive oil to coat the zucchini. Heat 1 Tbsp. oil in a skillet until very hot. SautĂ© mushrooms until brown. Add to soup. In same skillet, brown ½ lb Italian sausage. If you use links, cut them into bite size pieces after browning. Add to soup. Diced cooked zucchini and add to simmering soup. Add more spices if needed. Cook for 30 minutes. Add a splash of balsamic vinegar at the end. Serve with parmesan cheese and black olives as garnish.
Beans can be mashed with fork before you add them to broth if you don’t have a stick blender. Or you don’t have to mash them at all. I just like the creamy texture.

Stumped for a dinner Recipe?
Just like anyone else, I get stumped on what to serve for dinner and believe it or not, I do not like cookbooks. I love being as paperless as I can so if there is recipe I am looking for, I frequently search the web. One popular site is www.cooks.com. I like this one because it shows many versions of the same dish and you can choose the one that you like the best. You can print them out and keep them in plastic sleeves in a binder. I make notations on the sheets of any adjustments I made or likes or dislikes from the family. If they liked it, it goes in the binder. I can then pull out a single page and set it on the counter while cooking and since it is in a plastic sleeve, I can wipe it if it gets dirty---and in my ktichen, that is inevitable. No more cookbook storage.
Easter Coupons
In last Sunday's paper there was a big P and G insert. Check it out for lots of B1G1 coupons or order your coupons from www.thecouponclippers.com .
Really Good Ham
For Easter, I got an Archer Farms Spiral Sliced Ham from Target. They were on sale for $1.59/lb.
The ham was meaty and very flavorful. I will definitely buy another. A tip on hams: I always buy one that says "with natuaral juices". This will ensure that you get a ham that has not been pressed or has gelatin added to it.
When we eat down to the ham bone I make red or white beans with it. Yum! Very economical.

Raosted Asparagus

Bake for 10 minutes.
Hershey's Bliss Promo
My husbands favorite treat is Hershey's Bliss dark chocolate. I buy bags and bags of it and there are always coupons and sales. Right now Hershey's is having a promotion. You could win a personal trainer, home organzier, nanny, house cleaning service or personal chef. Just click the title above to enter.

Roasted Asparagus
Cut off woody stem of asparagus. A good way to determine this is to bend the stalk and when it breaks, that is where the woody stem is. Discard that portion. Place remaining stalks on sheet pan and drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt, pepper and any other seasoning you wish (like dill weed) and bake at 400 for 10 minutes. Delicious.
Raspberry Vinaigrette
Vinegars come in all kinds of flavors. One of my favorites is raspberry balsamic. It has a great sweetness and fruitiness. It goes great with green salads that have fresh fruit and blue or feta cheese in them. A basic recipe for a vinaigrette is as follows:
1 part vinegar of your choice to 2 parts oil of your choice. Add in some salt, pepper, a little honey, a some minced garlic to taste and voila, you have your homemade dressing. It is that easy.

Friendly Store Associates
I have noticed lately how helpful and friendly the sales clerks are when I enter stores now. I figure with the economy, stores are trying their best to provide better service. A few days ago I entered JCPenney and there was an associate at the door(upper floor) there to say "hello". They are all competing for your dollar. Use this to your advantage. Save up a little cash before you hit the mall and see how much you can save. I almost always combine a store mailer coupon with a sale for maximum savings.

Time and Saving
Like anything else in life, the more you put into something, the more you get out of it. The same is true for couponing and saving. I meet people everyday who want to save but think it takes too much time or they think they will have to go to too many stores. This is not the case. I teach how you can save shopping at your favorite stores and buying the brands you like. It doesn't take a lot of time and it is easy.Of course, the person who has unlimited time and access to lots of shopping will be able to save more, but you can save a substantiable amount just by applying a few tricks to your weekly routine without spending hours . Attend a Having Cents workshop to find out how.

Mattresses
Mattresses can be really expensive, but in most cases I have found that if you do your homework, you get what you pay for. Be sure to lie on a mattress for at least 15 minutes before deciding if you like it. Be sure to have your partner with you. I recently saved about $400.00 by ordering a mattress online. I first tried similar mattresses in stores and made sure I was comparing apples with apples. It can be confusing. Take your time and be sure before you "jump in". Click the link above to see a good online mattress resource.
Diaper Clubs for Moms
Along with other stores, Winn-Dixie offers baby clubs that give you rewards for purchasing diapers and baby items at their stores. Also, there are coupons readily available in the newspaper so start saving on those expensive diapers. http://www.winndixiegrocerystores.com/

Amazement
People are always amazed when they learn that clipping coupons from the newspaper is not the only source. Coupons are available on the web by clipping services like the http://www.thecouponclippers.com/. You can pay a fee for them to clip and you can get mulitples of the coupons you use. How clever is that? I use this service every week. When a coupon of an item I use frequently (like canned tomatoes) becomes available, I order several--sometimes 10 coupons and when that item goes on sale, I stock up.

Having$.cents Workshop
I will be holding a Having$.cents workshop Wednesday, February 3rd @ 6:30 pm in the Shenandoah area. To sign up and get directions email me makingcents@ymail.com
Good morning. Today is grocery day for me. I like Tuesdays because the shelves have usually been restocked from the weekend and there aren't a lot of people in the store, which makes it easier to shop with coupons. It takes a little more time in the check out line when you are price-matching and using coupons. It's never fun for the other patrons to wait in line behind a serious couponer, but if you are organized, checkout can be a whiz. Being organzied means being courteous.
